The legislative branch is composed of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Each MLA represents a different area within Alberta. The political party with the largest amount of MLAs within the legislature becomes the governing party. The leader of the governing party becomes the premier!

The judicial branch is composed of independent courts that act separately from the other two branches.

MLAs debate issues, pass laws and legislation. These meetings are held in the Legislature Building in Edmonton. The legislature is open to the public and offers free tours!

The cabinet drafts a proposed law or bill
The caucus will go over the draft and suggest changes
When the caucus has approved the bill, a cabinet minister introduces the bill in the legislative assembly
The bill must receive three readings and be granted royal assent
Once royal assent is granted, it becomes a Law
